Self-care begins with getting enough restorative sleep every night. Restorative sleep means getting 8-9 hours, nightly. In the first 4 hours of sleep this is used to restore our physical body. In the last 4 hours, this is used to restore our mind and emotional well-being.
For me this means having the energy to do the things I want to accomplish and the ability to get more things done. This also means that I feel emotional balance and able to enjoy being social, creative, playful, and happy to help others.
Here are some questions to find out if you are getting the nightly restorative sleep that you need:
- Does it take me more than 15 minutes to fall asleep at bedtime?
- Do I have a hard time waking up in the morning?
- Do I feel tired when waking up?
- Do I sleep 8-9 hours every night?
- Do I wake up more than once a night?
- Do I sleep in a room with any light or noise?
- Can I wake up on my own or do I need to use an alarm?
- Do I go to bed later than 10:00 p.m.?
- Do I get up earlier than 6:00 a.m.?
- Do I need to use medications in order to sleep? (prescription or OTC)
- Do I have a difficult time focusing and staying awake during the day?
If two or more of these questions is “yes” than changing your sleep habits to get or to stay healthy is something important to consider.
Enjoy this great day!
